Henry Clay letters 1826-1833

Letter to Mr. Sparks (probably Jared Sparks), dated May 21, 1826, describing the book The Modern Traveller: A Popular Description, Geographical, Historical, and Topographical, of the Various Countries of the Globe; letter to Mr. Milford, American Hotel, New York City, dated Nov. 16, 1833, asking that rooms be prepared for Clay and his family; and letter to Adam Beatty near Washington, dated April 3, 1829, declining an invitation to a public dinner. In this last letter Clay says that on their way home he and his family will "take a road, from necessity, which avoids Washington." Letter to Sparks sent from Washington, letter to Milford from Albany, letter to Beatty from Maysville.

Jared Sparks (1789-1866) was the President of Harvard University from February 1, 1849 to February 10, 1853. He was also a Unitarian minister, editor, and historian. Henry Clay Sr. (April 12, 1777 – June 29, 1852) was an American attorney and statesman who represented Kentucky in both the Senate and House. He was the seventh House speaker and the ninth secretary of state. He received electoral votes for president in the 1824, 1832, and 1844 presidential elections.
